What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture was discovered and perfected in the ancient orient. It works on a holistic approach to help improve health by gently tapping with very fine needles into the body’s natural energy channels called meridians. By doing this the meridians can be encouraged to flow more freely unblocking any congestion and thereby aiming to help ease emotional, physical and psychological problems relating to the corresponding channel and encouraging the body to heal itself.
My area of work focuses on women’s health and in particular with women that are trying for a baby. Over a course of treatments my plan will look at restoring general well being and I will take into account lifestyle, stress and diet as part of the consultation. Massage and reflexology may also be recommended at particular times of a women’s cycle.
A number of studies have found that acupuncture can have a positive effect on those trying for a baby and can actually aid the conception process. The treatment has been found to increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormone levels, regulate the menstrual cycle and help improve the lining of the uterus and quality of eggs released. Research has found that combining IVF with acupuncture greatly enhances the chance of conceiving and carrying a healthy pregnancy. In one study women who underwent acupuncture throughout their IVF treatment were almost twice as likely to fall pregnant as those who went through IVF alone. Findings of this nature could be due to a combination of enhanced function of the reproductive system combined with increased relaxation.
What happens during a treatment?
Through an in-depth consultation you will be asked about your general health, past medical history, lifestyle, energy levels, exercise as well as the details of your menstrual cycle including length, timing, spotting. Your tongue and pulse will be examined in detail.
Acupuncture places great emphasis on observing what goes on outside the body to discern what is going on inside.
Treatment will be aimed at restoring and correcting imbalances identified by this process. To help this along, you may be encouraged to participate in your treatment by, for example making dietary changes or performing exercises.
It is best to wear loose comfortable clothing for your treatment. Sometimes the area where the needles are inserted will feel tingly or a dull ache may be experienced. This is completely normal.
To fully benefit a course of acupuncture is recommended and you may initially require 6-12 weekly treatments. The initial session will last for approximately 1.5-2hrs and thereafter approximately 45minutes. This time includes pulse taking, discussing current condition as well as homecare.
Treatment Cost: Initial consultation and treatment £50; Subsequent treatments £35
